NZ Gothic
3800mm x 1900mm
Acrylic and spray paint on recycled PVC
$10,000.00 incl GST
This is kind of a giant, done as a performance piece, it's about living between 2 different countries, in my case Aotearoa and Czechia,
The barn represents a darkness and unease, a similar feeling in the history of both nations, it's functional to a point, but needs work if you want to live in it.
The Angel was sketched from a Church in Prague where my Czech Grandmother secretly married my English Grandfather, they then fled the country and were unable to return, this was in 1948.
The Huia, by some crazy serendipity was actually sketched in Prague museum.
The typewriter stencil was from photo of one of the first Czech Language typewriters. It represents my love of Literature and Culture.
There are a few other images that I'd be reluctant to make public but ask away if you're interested.
It's a painting about belonging while missing some other place.

With A Shrine To St Anna
Charcoal, shellac, oil and aerosols on linen
1000mm x 1000mm
$2,800.00 incl GST
In the village of my wife's family there are three spires, the smallest of which is a shrine to St Anna who appeared to some monks in the village hundreds of years ago, Anna is also the name of one of my daughters. Another feature of this experimental canvas is it's the first use of this particular typewriter stencil that went on to appear in paintings and murals until it finally fell apart, in that sense it's a first edition.
It's in a plain wooden frame.

The Green Revisited
Mixed media
1650mm x 1650mm (approx)
$2,500.00 incl GST
It was during one of those lockdowns and I was making art with whatever I had at home.
I cobbled this piece together using whatever materials I could find.
The composition is built upon the Flower of Life motive, I use that structure often.
I had painted a piece years earlier titled the Green and I was in the same mental space. During lockdown nothing was moving and nature was bouncing back fast, it was obvious how healthy the world would be, if it could just be left alone, I feel like that sometimes.
The title The Green I borrowed from a concept in 'The Swamp Thing' comics by Alan Moore.

Beautiful Anna
Oil with gold leaf on canvas
750mm x 750mm (approx).
$2,000.00 incl GST
Anna is my daughter, the middle one, all my daughters are beautiful but I would say that, I reference them often, especially in commissions and murals, Anna is a real joker, a performer and dazzling to me.
I painted this from a photo that my wife took one day, in the snow on Mount Taranaki, I used a flower of life pattern as a grid, at some point I was working on the piece upside down, so the paint would run up, and decided it worked better that way.

End Of A Process
Mixed media on 3 canvas'
1600mm x 1600mm each (total length 5 meters)
$12,000.00 incl GST
While I was cleaning the studio I had a folder with all the leftover sketches and notes from previous paintings, I took all those bits and pieces and made a collage, then used that collage as a reference for this painting.
This large triptych is composed of images that have been used before in other commissions and murals.
It's called 'End of a Process' because at the time I imagined I was making a dramatic change in my approach to large scale painting, maybe I did change a bit.

New Cave Wall
Oil and spray paint on canvas
1250mm x 1000mm
$4,500 incl GST
I decided on the title because the painting reminded me of cave paintings, I think there have been painters for a long time, not artists necessarily, just painters with some connection to the ethereal. This painting is about that bond, going back, generation after generation as far as can be imagined.

The Horse Had Bolted
Oil with copper leaf on linen
780mm x 780mm (approx).
$2,000.00 Incl GST
Originally, I started this piece as a study of colours, textures and paint consistency, letting the forms come through without trying or realising them to heavily, it's come to represent, to me at least, a pivotal period when I started to embrace abstraction, move away from representation and to trust in my own honest indignation. Placed among the rest of my paintings it is a small work like a punctuation mark, there's before and there's after.

3 of 5
Mixed media on canvas
1400mm x 1200mm
$4,500 incl GST
This process involved traveling light, and working with limited materials, the canvas was folded and refolded with cropped sections being sketched and painted on, I used the canvas instead of a sketch book, there is something special in the sketches and in the margins and edges, I want to retain that energy in the finished painting.
This canvas was primed in Whanganui, the images, sketches, notes, acrylic and watercolors were all added in St Ives, I stretched it out in rural Czech Rep (my wife’s home) and added layers of shellac, oil and glazes, I brought it back again to Whanganui for the final stretch, touch ups and varnish.
St Ives is a place I spent much of my childhood and like all the places this canvas traveled through, it’s a little bit, but not completely, like home.
Much of the imagery is of the landscape in and around St Ives, there is also a recurring image of a sculpture by a Cornish based artist, Paul Mount, this particular sculpture was given to my Grandfather, they were involved in the same pacifism, and Ambulance service in WW2, When my Grandfather passed the sculpture went to my Father, who I visited while working on this piece. I sketched the sculpture 5 times, as it was the 3rd of an edition of 5, hence the title.
This painting is an emotional, expressive, yet slow and meandering response to some of my own experiences and memories.
On May 23rd I saw a man walking along the beach in St Ives followed by six veiled women, not seven sadly, that sketch is in the center of the canvas.

The Third Chamber
Oil on canvas
1650mm x 2200mm
$8,500 incl GST
Initially this title was inspired by our new life, our baby daughter had arrived and we were looking for a house to buy. We found a place in Whanganui. Once we started moving into our new suburban home the purpose of the third bedroom was becoming increasingly unclear. The potential of this modest room seemed limitless.
I took the title from some prose by William Blake....
'In the third chamber was an Eagle with wings and
feathers of air, he caused the inside of the cave to
be infinite.'
This painting came to encapsulate my state of mind on the cusp of entering this new phase of life, (although I've worked on it, on an off for years) with memories of Prague and Mangawhai, the pride and responsibility my wife and I share and the joy and optimism that being a parent brought.
Often in painting I include whatever is in flower during the painting of the piece, in this case Bird of Paradise, in our garden in Whanganui, doing this helps me to keep the mood of a
painting stable and in season. The angels are taken from sketches made in the Prague Museum.

The Treatment of Sciatica
Oil and aerosol on canvas
1740mm x 1340mm
$5,000 incl of GST
I’d hurt my back, pinched the sciatic nerve apparently, I was lying flat and still for weeks, eventually I began to regain some movement and do some exercises, physiotherapy and pottery.
I also started a painting. The only requirement was that I get paint onto a canvas, move my body, step up a short ladder, hold a bucket, make a sweeping arc with a spray can, use a palette knife, expand the limits so I could move without pain and discomfort. As time went by, I did recover, and this painting became something interesting, I hope never to repeat the process, but I did learn from it.

Expression In Teal
Oil and spray paint on canvas

$2,000 incl GST
This is a purely expressive piece focusing on colour, tone, energy and is in keeping with other experiments and meditations, (esp Expression in Yellow, Expression in Autumn, New Cave Wall) it’s a style of painting that I find pleasing and a direction I am exploring.

The School House
Oil on canvas
1200mm x 1000mm
$4,000 incl of GST
This painting, like a lot of my others, they began life as a drop sheet while I worked on painting murals, I made sketches, notes and tested colours on the drop sheet, If you look at the left-hand side the Resene logo is still visible.
One of the studies on the drop sheet was of the Stokes Valley School House, that detail features on a mural in Stokes Valley Wellington and provides the title.
Once the drop sheet got to a certain point I cropped and stretched out a section and worked into it with oil paints, finding the imagery and symbolism amidst the splatter and blotches.
Magnolias were flowering at the time, their blossoms are in the center of the piece.

Expression In Autumn
Oil and Spray paint on canvas
1250mm x 1550mm
$5,000 incl GST
Currently being exhibited in Czech Republic
Inspired by and painted during Autumn in the Czech Republic, there’s a lot of birds trees and fish coming through, I’ve been merging lines from a spray can with expressive movements and slices from a selection of palette knives, much of the imagery is distilled from the sub-conscious, some of which I associate with coming to terms with living in the bohemian region, (that irony is not lost on me) clearly there are also some aspects that represent a longing for Aotearoa.

Dream Scape with Anna
Oil on recycled PVC canvas
900mm x 1650mm
$4,500 incl GST
This piece began its life as part of a public performance, I was painting large PVC billboards with spray cans on the street in Whanganui, I cropped and stretched this section and finished it in oils.
The reference for this painting was a photo of my daughter Anna, the photo was so beautiful, like I could see her grown into an adult, she does this too me all the time. I started painting her eyes and mouth, the areas in between became an inner landscape filled with symbols and imagery rising up through the subconscious.

In a Wild State He Is A Faithful Husband
Oil on recycled PVC canvas
800mm x 800mm

I was painting/performing with some friends at the Wild Food Festival Festival in Days Bay, Wellington, the paintings were on large PVC billboards and at the end of the festival I cut the canvas into bits and cropped and re stretched certain sections, this is one of those parts.
There were a lot of ducks at that festival, some on the menu, most just hanging around, I took the Quote “In a Wild State He Is A Faithful Husband” from an observation regarding ducks by a 19th century journalist Isabella Beeton.

I Swam In The Celtic Sea
Oil on canvas
700mm x 1100mm (approx).
$2,000.00 Incl GST
It was a cold May morning, I was in St Ives, (I sometimes end up there) the sea was so clear and beautiful, the cloudscape in the distance full of drama, I needed to be in it. This was Porthminster Beach.
After my swim I made a sketch onto a canvas I had tied to my pack, over time I worked into this painting.

That Pear, With Chaplin
Oil and aerosols on canvas
$4,000.00 incl GST
I painted most of this some years ago, and at the time the prevailing feeling about it was one of despair, I liked the painting but I wasn't confident to show something so simple and abstract, and I wasn't comfortable admitting I was depressed and on top of that part of it looked to me like a caricature of a 20th century dictator who I won't mention here.
So, I kept the piece at home. I called it 'This Pear'
Years later, I saw an old film with Charlie Chaplin, and his image replaced that of the dictator, at least to me, I'd only grown more fond of the painting, I'd also grown comfortable with its darkness and simplicity. So, I reworked it, finished it and titled it 'That Pear, with Chaplin'

Oil, Aerosols on Recycled PVC
1250mm x 1250mm
$2,000.00 incl GST $3,500.00 incl GST (1 & 2)
I was working on some other pieces referring to the loss of the commons, when the concept of the tragedy of the commons was explained to me, Wikipedia explains it as ...
The tragedy of the commons is the concept which states that if many people enjoy unfettered access to a finite, valuable resource such as a pasture, they will tend to overuse it and may end up destroying its value altogether. Even if some users exercised voluntary restraint, the other users would merely supplant them, the predictable result being a tragedy for all.

Singularity
Oils and spray paint on canvas
650mm x 950mm
$2,000.00 incl GST
'Maybe the Singularity happened and nobody noticed' I can't remember where I read that, it would be relating to the idea the that AI reached a point of no return and outgrew it's designer.
When I painted this, I was thinking more of infinity and black holes, but the title throws forward deeper ideas, perhaps I'm a person of singular ideas.
This is a rare, sparse and tonal painting for me, which seems to mean more than I can articulate.
One interesting aspect is that it can be rotated, there's no right way up, I turn it every few days and each time I do any people around me always say 'I prefer it that way"

A Horse Story
Oil on canvas
900mm x 900mm
$2,000.00 incl GST
This experimental canvas evolved alongside and in between the other pieces in my studio, first it was just marks, then using up leftover paint from other paintings, then it became something interesting, completely unpremeditated, free and unshackled.
While I was thinking these things I took my daughter horse riding, thereby including one small reference to normal life, giving it a title and leaving it at that.
